Make the Call, I know you'll make the call.
You: You're walking down the street. You're coming from your work. You're coming from the gym. You're coming from your tea-party rally. You're in a hurry. You're late for dinner. You're meeting the hot trainer for drinks. You're late to your anti-socialism bible group. Hustle and bustle, it's the American way. "Gotta move, got places to be, better hurry, gonna cut through the ally, can't delay....
Him: Face down. It's dark but there's blood. He's not moving. His breathing sounds funny.
You: Damn, the hot trainer better understand. You pull out your cell. You dial 911.
You: Then you call your, significant other, trainer, bible group. You're going to be late. You have to wait for the police and the ambulance. You don't move him, somewhere you heard not to move people, so you cover him with your jacket.
Him: Not moving.
You: The police arrive with the paramedics. You wait. They're busy. Time passes. You know the trainer went home. The police want a statement. Finally they let you go. You socialized medicine loving Euro-trash loser! What?
Him: 60 minutes earlier. When he snuck in from Mexico he was just going to work, but the gang was where the big money is. Sell drugs, use drugs, have protection for a little side work. The side work tonight was home invasion. $50 cash, some jewelry to sell, to bad the old lady came home early. She didn't get a chance to scream though did she? clean get away. Celebrating with crack was a bad idea. Burned hand, lost grip on the fire escape, fall to the ally. Illegal, uninsured, almost dead.
So where am I going with this? The guy in the ally? Him? Repulsive character, who cares what happens to him. I care about you. When you saw him while you where returning from work you didn't think about papers. When you knew it might cost you a chance to score with the trainer you still stopped. Even though it was potluck night at the bible group, and you really didn't want to miss it, you stopped. You made the call. You made the call because a human being needed medical help. You made the call because you are a good person and it was the right thing to do. You made the call because deep inside you believe that people that need medical care should get medical care. You never once thought about who was going to pay you just expected the ambulance to show up.
Hey tea party guy! I guess you didn't know you were a socialist. I guess you didn't know you believed in universal health care. On FOX news or the left wing blogs they prove things the easy way. Prove we need health care wheel out a sick kid. Prove that torture is OK, create a ticking time bomb fantasy and put the whole city at risk. Straw-man arguments to convince the true believers. Heartstrings and fear, two common ways to win an argument. How about the truth. No situational ethics, only the way things happen in real time. How about the truth. The way the person reading this would react, not the way imaginary people like the 24 guy behave.
You know you make the call. You know that some one has to pay. You know it's not an audition where you get to check resumes. You know that you would get that guy, that horrible guy, health care without even batting an eye and you'd mess up your own day to do it. Socialist! We're going to repeal healthcare reform? Why? We're all on the same page. On the street, when push comes to shove, most of us are on the same page. There is no red and blue, there is only someone that needs a doctor. Let's fix healthcare reform. Make the call. You know you would make the call. You're a socialist, yes you are.
